PERRY AND WARSAW SHCOOLS COMBINE EFFORTS FOR RACE AT WYOMING COUNTY INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY MAY 31ST |
|
A unique racing event featuring teams from two area schools will be part of the Friday, May 31st racing event at Wyoming County International Speedway (WCIS) in Perry, NY. The paved 1/3 mile “Bullring” will host a special event featuring tech teams from Perry and Warsaw schools, racing CO2 powered vehicles.
“We’ve been helping the Warsaw schools with this project for many years by providing judges and prizes,” said WCIS Promoter Jim Majchrzak. “This year we’re proud to not only have the Perry schools on board, but to also host the competition at our facility for the second time.”
WCIS drivers and officials will act as judges in categories that include best appearing, best engineered, and quality of build. The CO2 races will preceed the regular race program, getting underway at 6:30. The champions will be crowned during intermission, which is when prizes will also be awarded.
Each competing student (accompanied by an adult) will be admitted free for the night’s program. Additional adults are $10, with students admitted for $5. “We encourage classmates and their families to attend to cheer on their favorites,” said Majchrzak, “And we have an outstanding race program that night that features a 50 lap feature for our Super Stocks, plus the SST Modifieds, 4 Cylinders, Vintage Late Models, and a Double Figure 8 race, which will provide a ton of thrills and action.”
Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with the first heat race getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Wyoming County International Speedway is on 35 Adrian Road in Perry, NY, just 30 minutes south of Rochester and 40 minutes east of Buffalo. LEWIS OPENS 2013 SEASON WITH WIN AT WYOMING COUNTY INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY |
|
Kevin Lewis held off a pair of veterans in the final laps of Friday night’s season opening 30-lap SST Modified feature and won the first race of the season at Wyoming County International Speedway (WCIS) in Perry, NY on Friday night.
Steve Fuchs took the lead at the start of the feature event, with Lewis falling into the runnerup spot. Lewis was able to find the open door on the inside lane on lap 6 to power into the race lead. Lewis had opened up a solid gap until the caution flew on lap 13 when Daniel Majchrzak spun in turn four. On the restart, Lewis had the advantage over a solid battle for second between Dick Kluth and Dan Hoag. Kluth, who had sustained damage in a heat race crash, held off repeated challenges from Hoag as Lewis stretched out his lead in the closing laps. At the finish, Lewis was the winner, with Kluth and and Hoag trailing. Majchrzak and Fuchs rounded out the top five.
SST Modifed heat races were won by Lewis and Mike Marollo.
The 25-lap Super Stock race was dominated in the opening segment by Austin Fugle, who pulled out a substantial margin over Dan Majchrzak in the first segment of the race. While Fugle was on cruise control up front, Alan Bookmiller was on a charge from the back of the pack, using the low lane to move into the top five. Majchrzak and Fugle swapped the lead once on a lap 9 restart, but Bookmiller inserted himself into the battle, taking second on lap 14 and moving past Fugle for the lead two laps later. Bookmiller’s efforts were rewarded with an opening night feature win, followed by Fugue and Majchrzak. There was a dead heat for fourth place at the finish between Anthony Kelly and Cassie Logsdon.
Super Stock heats were won by Don Greek and Austin Fugle.
The 20-lap 4 Cylinder feature was a wild affair that saw Tom Lalomia Jr. in the midst of a hectic battle for the lead that included Mike Bradshaw and Bob Woch. Defending track champion Eric Hastreiter also moved into the lead group near the halfway point. Several cautions and restarts shuffled the deck, and as the feature moved into the final laps, Lalomia and Hastreiter battled hard for the lead. Lalomia held on for the win and pulled into victory lane with a flat left front tire, which had slowly been losing air pressure through the whole race. Hastreiter was followed by Christine Hanel, who made a pass on Kevin Grom for third in the late going and was right behind the leaders at the checkers. Val Stephens rounded out the top five finishers.
4 Cylinder heats were won by Tom Lalomia Jr. and Christine Hanel.
Friday night, May 24th, Wyoming County International Spedway welcomes a Sprint Car Exhibition and the first leg of the Raceway 5/WCIS Dirt vs. Asphalt challenge for the 4 Cylinders to “The Bullring”. There will also be a tire rolling contest at intermission. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. with the first heat race getting underway at 7:30 p.m. Wyoming County International Speedway is on 35 Adrian Road in Perry, NY, just 30 minutes south of Rochester and 40 minutes east of Buffalo.
