Ed Schueler (69) races with eventual SST Modified winner Andy Jankowiak (57).
Andy Jankowiak made his mark during his first visit to Wyoming County International Speedway for 2013 by taking the feature win in Friday night’s 30-lap SST Modified feature event in a car that was not 100 percent. “We actually dumped pepper in the radiator to plug a hole,” Jankowiak related in Victory Lane. “I was keeping an eye on the oil and water temperature because I didn’t want to blow the motor up, but they held steady through the race.” Jankowiak joined Dan Majchrzak, Christine Hanel, and Cory Sawyer as feature winners on Hidden Valley Animal Adventure Park night.
Jankowiak started 8th in the field and eventually battled his way to second place by lap 9, setting the stage for a torrid battle with Ed Schueler for the race lead. Schueler used lapped traffic to his advantage to hold off Jankowiak’s challenges until the first caution of the feature flew on lap 14 for Steve Fuchs’ stopped car on the backstretch. Jankowiak took the lead on the restart, but the race was far from over.
Several minor spins brought out a rash of yellow flags in the second half of the feature event, the final one coming on lap 29, setting the stage for a single-lap dash to the checkered flag. On the restart, Jankowiak gapped out by three car lengths over Schueler, as he had been doing on each restart since taking the lead. Going into turn two, Schueler’s car faltered, as he had run out of fuel. Mike Marollo and Toad Bradshaw were able to dash past Schueler’s slowing car to take second and third behind Jankowiak at the checkers. Dan Hoag took fourth and Daniel Majchrzak rounded out the top five finishers.

The 25-lap Super Stock feature began with Mike Chenaille grabbing the early lead as Daniel Majchrzak moved into third on lap 3. Contact between Allen Bookmiller and Ron Greek brought out the caution flag on the next lap, and on the restart, Majchrzak motored past Chenaille to take the race lead. As Majchrzak pulled away at the front of the field, Austyn Fugle was picking his way through the top five, moving into second around the halfway point. Fugle closed to within less than a car length in the final couple of laps, but a slight bobble coming off turn two on the white flag lap sealed the win for Majchrzak, who grabbed his first win of the season in the Super Stock division. Fugle was second, followed by Bookmiller, Chenaille, and Anthony Kelley.

Super Stock heats were taken by Greek and Bookmiller.
The 4 Cylinder division ran a ‘Dash For Cash’ format instead of heats and a feature on Friday night. Christine Hanel, who had blown the engine in her car two weeks prior, had a new motor under the hood and put it to good use to grab a convincing win over Kevin Grom and Val Stephens. Defending track champion Eric Hastreiter had a mechanical problem just one lap into the event and was credited with a fourth place finish.

The Vintage Late Models made their return Friday night, and their race turned into a ‘Bowtie Brigade’ versus ‘Blue Oval’ battle, as the 1950’s era Chevys of Brian Bunce and Ray Hadsell battled all race long with Rich Zeller in his 1961 Ford Galaxy bodied machine and Cory Sawyer in his ’69 Ford Torino. Sawyergot the upper hand with two laps to go and claimed the win for the Ford faction, followed by the Chevys of Bunce and Hadsell. Zeller was fourth, with Matt Jenejahn in a 50’s era Buick-bodied car rounding out the top five.

Cory Sawyer's "Big Orange" Torino was the Vintage Late Model winner.
Fans were also treated to a pair of exhibitions featuring kart racers from the Genesee Valley Kart Club of Avon and a pair of winged Sprint cars powered by 4-cylinder Midget engines. Additional prizes were also handed out in the night’s 50/50 raffle, including Safari Tour packages from Hidden Valley Animal Adventure and a pair of tickets to the August NASCAR event at Pocono that were provided by Richard Childress Racing and Tim Packman.
On Friday night, June 21st, ‘The Bullring’ returns to action with the SST Modifieds, Super Stocks, and 4 Cylinders on the card. It’s also Bike Giveaway night and the annual Kid’s Bike Race will be a part of the intermission activities.
