Opening Day receives thumbs up !
Opening Day receives thumbs up !

Perry NY, After a few thunderclouds and a couple spatters of rain just as the gates were scheduled to open, the sky cleared up and the first race of the 2009 was underway. The BullRing of Wyoming County began the circle Track season of events with 4-Cylinder Stocks, SuperStocks and SST Modifieds. The track was relatively green, which means...there wasn't much rubber on it, but before long, the pace was fast and the fans were being entertained by some of short track racing's biggest stars.

The division, in which everyone from beginners to veterans can take part, entered the 1/3rd mile oval first.
4-Cylinder racers, piloting a variety of cars from Pontiac to Hondas tested their skill against the competition and the concrete walls of the BullRing oval. Only 2 cars of 15 failed to start the feature event...One do to a broken transmission and another to the retaining wall of turn two. Chalk one up to the BullRing!

By the end of the first feature, two veterans and a second year driver crossed the stripe to celebrate victory.
#36, Austin Fugle of Livonia, finished third, showing fans that his 4-Cylinder runs as good as it looks. Second place, finished a former champion of 2007, the #93 of Kevin Grom. During the on track interview, Grom stated, ‘after taking last season off, I put air in the tires, checked the oil and loaded her up to go to the track...' I guess his hard work paid off...

The top finisher in the 4-Cylinder division was no stranger to victory lane. After finishing 2nd overall in points last year, #33 Margaret McDonald showed the boys who's the boss at WCIS. Thanking her husband and brother for all their support, She proudly excepted her first trophy of the 2009 season!

The early rain held back some of the competition from making the tow to central, western NY, but those who did, put on a great show. Tony Pangrazio of Alba, powered the #41 SuperStock into the lead from the outside lane. Side by side with 2008 champion #17 Brian Gordon, they entered turn 3 only a few laps from the finish. Gordon down low, breaks loose but holds the #17 machine from taking out the passing leader...the fans gaze onward as the two drivers race to the stripe side by side and the checkered flag falls. Todd Stone #28 followed for third place and all three teams commented on the clean racing of their fellow BullRing competitors.

The SST Modified division was full of former SST Series Champions and teams. Fast and concise, these open wheel machines claimed their position on the asphalt surface, one car at a time as they made their way to the front. Rounding out the top three was the youngest of the top finishing trio. From Holland NY, second generation driver Joe Evans was SST Series Champ in 08'. Evans commented... the #91 machine was alittle off, but felt good coming in third on opening day.

Returning to the BullRing for only his second time in his very successful racing career, Bill Hebing joined hands with Ed McGuire Motorsports to chase the 2009 SST Series Championship. McGuire's team has already been successful in 04', 06', and 07', so the new partnership may prove to be right on track as Hebing pushed the #51 into a respectable second place finish.

Up to the front and first across the stripe, the 2005 SST Series Champion Tony Handbury, piloted his father's #29 machine into victory lane. Celebrated with a multi-donut smoke show, fans and family cheered on as Tony then climbed from the window to except his award. The SST Angels, Miranda and Tiffany congratulated Handbury for his team's success, then posed in victory lane, for winner circle pictures by MM sportsphotos.

This Friday evening at the BullRing - Twin 25's for the SST Mods...Next week - 50 laps for the SST SuperStock Tour. For a full season of Short Track racing Entertainment, Visit the BullRing every Friday Evening at 7:30pm.
