#71 Returns to Racing in Perry
Perry, NY: After several years out of the racing seat, Pete Yasses will climb back behind the wheel of this new #71 SST Modified at WCIS. Yasses began racing around 1976, chasing the checkered flags of Holland and Perry Speedways. In 1992 Pete was recognized as ‘rookie of the year’ in the charger division of Holland, but because of rule changes for the following season, the team packed up and moved to the pits of Genesee Speedway for one season of dirt. Although fans didn’t see Pete in a competitive nature with stockcars over the next several years, the Yasses family remained a part of motorsports with Pete’s son Jacob Piloting a go-cart and Pete becoming the race director of Genesee Speedway.
The open wheel modified, now numbered 71 along with the team’s pit crew also comes back to Perry with its own bit of history. The car… was once driven by Buck Catalano, a well known veteran racer of the region, who captured the NASCAR Northeast Championship behind the wheel of this machine.
Pete’s crew… made up of wife Michelle, son Jacob, and friends Rusty Collings, Rich Bernard, and Tim Tibbs also have participated in motorsports of the region. Tim Tibbs comes with experience from the days of B.R. Dewitt and the Wyoming County native, #52 Doug Hewitt.
Currently Pete Yasses and family reside in Byron, NY and own and operate ‘Yasses Trucking and Construction’. The team’s primary sponsor is ‘JP Property’ and they appreciate all the support everyone has made to make this season possible. The Yasses’ #71 machine will be back on display at the Batavia City Center Motorsports Show April 6-8th. Opening day at the asphalt Bullring of Perry, NY is set for Sunday May 14th (Mother’s Day) at 2:30.
