The Champ Is Back in Victory Lane at WCIS

By: Steven Petty

PERRY, NY… A warm pre-Summer evening welcomed the cars, stars, and fans to the Wyoming County International Speedway for the racing action under the lights. It was a night of drivers making a return visit to the Promised Land known as Victory Circle but for one driver, the wait to get back to victory lane was a long wait. Before the results of this week’s racing action, let’s recap what happened at the Bullring. Two weeks ago saw Patrick Emerling take top honors in the SST Modifieds. Phil Alhart Jr won in the SST Super Stocks. Charles Buchanan won in the 4 Cylinders and Robbie Micoli won in the Mini Cups. Out of those four, only two were successful on repeating on this evening at WCIS.

2009 Wyoming County International Speedway SST Modified Track Champion John Barber of Bliss, NY took top honors in the 35 lap affair for the premier division at the Bullring. Dick Kluth and Greg Utberg led the field for the start of the 35 lap race with the racing veteran Kluth getting out to the early advantage. Andy Jankowiak was the car on the move as Andy J started dead last and then worked his way to the front of the field as he was up to the fourth position when the first yellow flag of the event occurred when Jim Ling, Tim Hoegel, Greg Utberg, Don King and Tim Welshans came together on the entrance to the back straightaway. Only King and Utberg were able to continue on. Just before the caution, 2009 track champion John Barber passed Kluth for the number one spot. The defending champ was on a mission as he has not seen victory lane since 2009. Dick Kluth was running in the top three but contact with John Julicher Jr. sent the 27 machine spinning down the front stretch causing the field to bunch up one more time. Then off the restart, Barber and Jankowiak continued to be the class of the field and Andy J was close to the rear bumper of the Barber 01 machine but Jankowiak got loose causing Barber to take complete control of the event and led the remaining laps to pick up his first win of 2009. Andy Jankowiak was able to hang on and finish up in the runner up position. Jim Love had his best finish this season coming home in third. Just a note, the top three finished on American Racer Tires as this is the second week that WCIS is allowing drivers to run either American Racers of Hoosier 10/70’s.

Phil Alhart Jr. was victorious for the second consecutive week for the SST Super Stocks. Cassie Logsdon and heat winner Jeremy Gray led the field for the start of the 25 lap event with Gray out to the early advantage. The driver on the move was current points leader Phil Alhart Jr. Phil took over the top spot from Gray on lap 10 but the lead soon dissolved as Joe Mancuso spun on the back straightaway to cause the field to bunch up one more time. Then off of the restart Austyn Fugle took over the top spot but only for a short time as Alhart Jr. regained the number one position and that pass was the final one as Alhart Jr picked up win number two on the season. Austyn Fugle was able to hold off a battle for third with Cassie Logsdon and Jeremy Gray with Gray getting loose and Logsdon finishing third followed by Gray and Joe Mancuso rounding out the top five.

The always competitive 4 Cylinder division worked their way onto the speedway for their 20 lap feature event and it was 14 year old phenom Tommy Catalano picking up his third victory of the season after leading all twenty laps for the win. Daniel Majchrzak and Tommy Catalano led the field for the 20 lap affair with Catalano getting out to the early advantage. Catalano was showing the way with the battle was behind the leader for position two on back. Daniel Majchrzak was running in the top three for most of the event but on the final lap, but had problems and crashed the familiar 14 machine up against the back straightaway wall. Charles Buchanan was able to get around Majchrzak for the runner up spot and Bob Bogner was also able to get around the wrecked Majchrzak machine to take third place. The race would end with Tommy Catalano picking up win number three on the season for the Mad Mark’s Welding, Cams NY Pizzeria, PJ Radiator, Catalano Motorsports entry. Last week’s feature winner Charles Buchanan would finish second and Bob Bogner would round out the top three.

In the Mini Cup division, Daniel Majchrzak and Kennedy White led the way for the start of the feature event with Robbie Micoli getting the advantage from his fourth starting spot and not looking back as led all the laps to get win number three on the season. Kennedy White was second with Jason Eck in third and Daniel Majchrzak rounding out the field.
