Andy J Smokes Field on Pirate Night at WCIS

PERRY, NY¦ Bright sunny skies welcomed fans to ABC Glass night at Wyoming County International Speedway on Friday night. The annual Pirate Trailer Race took place after the racing program was completed on the Bullring 1/3rd mile oval. The theme of the night is based off the annual Sea Serpent Weekend that takes place down in the Village of Perry and also on Silver Lake. Today, the sea serpent is a mascot for the Perry community but local tales have been told that the serpent was seen by anglers back in 1855.

The racing on the historic Wyoming County oval was exciting for all the fans to see.  Finding victory lane on Pirate Night was Andy Jankowiak in the SST Modifieds. Mike Chenaille picked up his second straight win in the SST Super Stocks. Tommy Catalano won his sixth race of the year in the 4 cylinders and Jason Eck picked up the win in the Mini Cups.  Anthony Kelly picked up the victory in the Pirate Trailer Race.

Lexi Wilson and Jim Ling led the strong field of SST Modifieds to the start of the 35 lapper with Wilson getting the lead but that would be short lived as Jim Ling hit the turn two wall and caused a multi car pile up with Andy Jankowiak, Patrick Emerling, Greg Utberg, and Wilson all involved. Wilson, Ling and Utberg were unable to continue. The restart green saw Andy J and Patrick Emerling up front with the current points leader Jankowiak up front. Great racing with the top three but multi time feature winner Jankowiak was not getting denied on this night for win number four on the year.  Just past the halfway mark, Patrick Emerling slowed on the back straightaway and made a complete stop on the front stretch to cause the yellow flag to fly. The following restart say Andy J pull away from defending track Champion John Barber and Kevin Lewis and neither of them could reel in the high flying Jim and Bob’s Service, Rear End Specialties 57 machine of Jankowiak. John Barber would have a great run to finish in the runner up spot and Kevin Lewis, the son in law of veteran Dick Kluth came home in position number three.  Just a note that next week’s Driver of the Week will be Kevin Lewis.

The SST Super Stocks hit the speedway as the last feature of the evening but not without a case of good sportsmanship. Pete Pieczynski had motor issues during practice and was unable to make the repairs to race in the heat race. Current WCIS points leader Phil Alhart Jr. had problems in the heat race as the rear end had to be replaced in order for Phil to run in the feature to keep his points up. So in a case of good sportsmanship, Pete Pieczynski allowed the Alhart racing team to put in their rear end so Phil can keep his points up and run in the feature. Brad Collings and Jeremy Gray led the Super Stocks to the green flag in their 25 lap feature event with Collings getting the early lead. Brad would lead the event but had some tough competition from feature winners Mike Chenaille and Cassie Logsdon for much of the event. Collings would give up the lead as his machine was loose with just a handful of laps remaining to “Scrappy” Mike Chenaille. Chenaille would have to hang on to the lead after a late race caution to pick up his second straight feature win. Austyn Fugle had handling issues early in the event and manage to drive his machine to the second position while Brad Collings would hang on to finish in the third position.

Eric Haistreiter and Kevin Grom led the competitive field of 4 cylinders for their 20 lap feature and it was the 93 machine of Grom getting the early advantage. The second go around saw current points leader Tommy Catalano take over at the point from his fourth starting spot. The first yellow of the night came just one lap later as Charles Buchanan stopped on the back stretch.  The restart green saw the PJ Radiator, Cams NY Pizzeria, Catalano Motorsports entry of Tommy Catalano back at the front of the field.  Catalano would fend off all competitors to get not only his fourth straight feature win, but his sixth victory of the season. Kevin Grom would finish second while early race leader Eric Haistreiter would round out the top three.

Buffalo’s Jason Eck would pick up the Mini Cup feature win. Eck started on the pole and led all the laps to pick up the win. Rob Micoli would finish second followed by Kennedy White and Troy Collings, who was making his first Mini Cup start of the season.

Next week its double points Mid Season Championships for all divisions at the Bullring. It is also Farm Days at the speedway.
