Robert Fink Wins Jim Roberts Memorial Race

By: Steven Petty

PERRY, NY Blue skies and sunshine set up for perfect weather conditions for Reunion Night at Wyoming County International Speedway. For the 51st consecutive season, the Adrian Road Speed plant in Perry, NY is home to great racing action throughout the summer months. This night was no exception as the cars and the stars came out in full force as we honored former Track Welder and WCIS Wall of Fame member Jim Roberts with a Memorial Race for the Super Stocks. The Country Music band Double Cross also performed for the Fans after the races were completed at the historic Perry, NY oval.

Joe Mancuso and Mike Chenaille led the field for the start of the Jim Roberts Memorial 50 for the Super Stocks with the Mancuso getting the early advantage but the lead was short lived due to Mancuso and Chenaille making contact setting up a chain reaction with Steve Malin, Jay Canonico, Ron Roberts and Jason Dieter were involved in the scuffle.

The restart saw Robert Fink and Willie Strusz on the front row with Fink getting the advantage. The Schatown, PA resident made the long haul to Perry to run in this prestigious event. Fink would hold off multiple challenges from Strusz and third place car Phil Alhart Jr. under the green flag and the yellow lights would come back on one more time as Brad Collings went under power on lap 19.

The restart saw Fink and Strusz continue to pull away from the field as Phil Alhart Jr went backwards as Alhart suffered a flat right rear tire. Cassie Logsdon and Austyn Fugle were able to get by the Alhart Jr machine to advance their spots on the speedway. Alhart would eventually go into the pits to change a right rear tire and would get back onto the track and finish the event. But there was no stopping Robert Fink on this night as he would lead from green to checker as he picked up not only his first win at WCIS, but also a guaranteed starting spot for the Super Stock portion of the Race of Champions Weekend at Oswego. Willie Strusz would finish second followed by WCIS regular Cassie Logsdon. Street Stock competitor John Hewson Jr. was the first Street Stock across the line and he was also awarded a qualifying spot for the Street Stock/Factory Stock portion of the Race of Champions Weekend as well.

Jim Ling and Ed Schueler led the SST Modifieds for the start of their 35 lap feature event and it was the Ling machine getting out to the lead. Heat winner and multi time feature winner Andy Jankowiak took over the top spot on lap three and quickly pulled away from the field. Amy Catalano worked her way up to the runner up spot but a yellow flag came out for debris bunched the field back up. Catalano and Lexi Wilson had to go pit side due to issues with their machines but were able to rejoin the field for the restart.

Andy J would continue to lead the field on the restart and both Lexi Wilson and Amy Catalano were moving their way back up through the field and Wilson made contact with another car and spun and hit the turn one wall. Catalano meanwhile, worked her way back up to third until the yellow came out to slow the field down one more time.

The late race restart saw Jankowiak pull away but not by much over Catalano as Andy J would pick up his sixth victory of the season at the Bullring. Amy Catalano would finish in second and Jim Ling would round out the top three.

Heat winner Charles Buchanan and Daniel Majchrzak led the 4 cylinders to the green flag for their 20 lap feature event and it was Buchanan getting the early advantage. Lap seven was not a lucky lap for the race leader as Buchanan slowed coming off of turns three and four and came to a stop on the front stretch.

Restart saw Kevin Grom and seven time feature winner Tommy Catalano led the field down for the green flag and it was the Grom machine getting ahead of the pack. Side by side action continued for several laps between Catalano and Grom and it was Tommy Catalano getting the lead just before Daniel Majchrzak lost the handle of his 14 machine in turn four. Catalano continued to lead after another mid race restart with Grom, Eric Haistreiter and Mike Hossfeld leading the way but when the event was over, Tommy Catalano would find himself back in victory lane with Grom finishing in second and Mike Hossfeld finishing in third.

Jason Eck and Andy Jankowiak would put on a show in the Mini Cup feature. Jason would lead a lap, then Andy would lead a lap but it was Eck who picked up the win over Jankowiak with the Kennedy White machine placing third.

Next week at the Bullring is Napa Night at the Races featuring Junkyard Soccer. A regular Friday night racing program will be on the card featuring a 50 lap race for the Super Stocks. Gates open at 5 and race time is at 7:30. For more information, call 585-237-2580 or log on to or check out the speedway’s Facebook page by searching Wyoming International Speedway.
