The BullRing holds true to it's name !

By: Steven Petty

PERRY, NY… Cool but sunny conditions welcomed fans from all over Western New York and Southern Ontario to the Bullring at Wyoming County International Speedway for the Insinger Race Fuels 100 for the SST Modifieds. The visiting Casey’s TQ Midget Series was also on hand besides the Super Stocks and 4 Cylinder Stocks.

Jimmy Zacharias and Dick Kluth led the field for the green and it was JZ out to the early lead. Zacharias would continue to hold the top spot but that was changed as Andy Jankowiak and Patrick Emerling were able to get around the Zacharias machine for the top two spots. A pair of cautions including a pile up in turn two involving Ed Schueler, Andy Lewis, Kevin Lewis and Jim Love with Kevin Lewis able to pull away from the scene. Love was sent pit side on the wrecker as Schueler and Andy Lewis went pit side under their own power.   A wreck in turn one and two on lap 19 involving Kevin Lewis and Chris Comstock caused the red flag to appear. Drivers were both ok as Comstock was able to continue on while Lewis’s night was over. The field would be slowed once again as Jim Ling and Andy Lewis got caught in turn four. Both drivers were able to continue on. The red would appear again as newly crowned champion at the Holland NASCAR Motorsports Complex Mike Fiebelkorn Jr. and Jeremy Haudricourt came together on the back stretch.  Great racing all over the third mile and Andy Jankowiak and Patrick Emerling continued to show the way up front as the cars to beat and contact was made between the two leaders that brought out a late race yellow. Both Jankowiak and Emerling had to go tail for the restart and both were able to get back on to the speedway and back into the top three. Andy J would hang on and take his second consecutive SST 100 victory on Labor Day Weekend at WCIS. Tony Hanbury would finish second and Patrick Emerling would round out the top three.

Austyn Fugle and Mike Chenaille led the way for the start of the Super Stock feature and it was Austyn Fugle out to the early advantage. Then third place starter Jay Canonico took over the top spot and would lead the way until the first caution of the race for Willie Strusz slowed in turn two. The early race restart saw Canonico and Steve Vinyard leading the way and Canonico was able to get back up front. Then just before the halfway mark, Tim Garlock had problems with his right front wheel and collected Vinyard, Brad Collings and Brian Gleason in turn two to slow the field down a second time.  Then current Points Leader Phil Alhart Jr. took over the top spot from Canonico but a slowing Fugle and Cassie Logsdon rides slowed the pace down one more time. The single file restart saw Alhart continue to lead the way until Willie Strusz would take over and hang on pick up the victory. Alhart Jr would hang on to the runner up spot over defending WCIS Track Champion Bobby Lippa Jr.

Rookie Joe Horavitz Jr. and heat winner Eric Haistreiter led the strong field of 4 Cylinder Stocks to the green flag and it was Haistreiter up front leading the way. George Quintana lost control of his machine to bring out the first yellow flag of the night. The restart saw Haistreiter and current point’s leader Tommy Catalano on the front row and Catalano gained the top spot but the yellow came out one more time just four laps in for the Doug Packman car as he hit the turn three concrete. The restart saw Catalano jump out ahead of Haistreiter as Kevin Grom would get around Haistreiter for the runner up spot. Kevin Grom would pass the young Catalano for the lead just past the halfway mark. Grom would hold off the point’s leader to pick up another win for the “Sherwin Williams Special”. Catalano would finish second and Eric Haistreiter would round out the top three.

Heat Winners Bobby Holmes and Kent Turnbull led the field for the green flag for the 20 lap feature event and it was the Holmes machine up front leading the way. The third generation driver from Lockport, driving for Vinnie Christiano was strong all evening for the Casey’s TQ Midget Series stop at the Bullring. There was some exciting three and four wide racing all over the 1/3rd mile speedway.  Just past the halfway mark was the first time the yellow lights flew for current Series Points Leader Justin Mapes who spun in turn two.  The restart saw Team Vinnie members Bobby Holmes and Dave Wollaber leading the way with Timex Morgan battling Wayne Turnbull for the third and final podium finish and Morgan was a man with a mission as he tried to passed Wollaber for second but Wollaber thought otherwise as he passed Bobby Holmes for the lead and win over Holmes, Morgan, Turnbull and Andy Jankowiak rounding out the top five for the competitive TQ Midget series.

WCIS will be back in action on Saturday October 2nd as it’s the annual Fall Shootout at the Bullring. The SST Modifieds will be featured in a 100 lap event. The Super Stocks, 4 Cylinder Stocks and the Casey’s TQ Midgets will also be on the racing card on Western New York’s true racing finale.  Pit gates will open at 11:00 AM, with the front gates opening a short time later at high noon and the green flag will drop at 3:00 pm sharp.  For more information, check out www.wyomingcountyinternationalspeedway.com or on Facebook by searching Wyoming International Speedway.
