SST SuperStocks hit a home run!

Perry NY; the first SuperStock Tour Race since the official development of the new SST Division, finds success after Mother Nature post poned last weeks events. Hosted at the BullRing, Wyo. Co. Int Speedway, 19 teams arrived for the inaugural race. Competitors from several tracks represented regional motor sport facilities for 50 laps of great motor racing action. The SST SuperStock rules now encompass the general rules of the northeast home tracks, and welcome additional participation and commitment. As in the success of the SST Modifieds, The SuperStock teams can expect consistency and longetivity of the rules in similar fashion… this continues to encourage growth with in the division.

Friday on the 1/3rd mile asphalt BullRing of Perry NY, three heat races helped to sort out the field. Top 12 teams redrew for position and the #16 Cochraine Racing, machine of Jay Mudra pulled pole. Lap one of the feature event, Mudra moved out to an early lead followed by an array of competitors including #17 Gordon, #32/39 Welshans, #77 Cline, #88 Garlock, #6 Jack, #20 Chenaille, #4 Lafferty, #11 Porter and many more. 13 laps in, Mudra tangled with #36 Balanca on the front shute and both cars spun to the infield. This opened the door for #49 Merritt to gain control of the lead. To the outside, challenged #64 Gleason who found the top grove to be fast enough to take the lead intermittently through out the middle of the race.

Few cautions for minor incidents slowed the field…but fans enjoyed a very fast paced show full of side-by-side competition. #07 Logsdon broke a right front hub and coasted to a sparky stop in turn one. #41 Pangrazio continued to shake off the bugs of his new machine with a bad rear end & eventual loss of the transmission. #15 Lippa Jr limped across the line with a hurt motor and the #28 Stone pulled pit side for a flat tire change yet managed to make it back to a respectable 6th place finishing position.

Mudra continued to pick off the field one by one as he climbed back to the front. But from a mid-pack starting position, patients and speed paid off…Mike Nichols #72 moved past the leaders to capture the first ever SST SuperStock Tour Race! In victory lane, Mike celebrated, yet continued to look for the beautiful SST Angels to appear. To no avail, he must return to the BullRing for the Labor Day weekend party…SST Modified Tour 100, to enjoy the Angels presents

SST Official Tech Inspector, Dennis Murphy Jr. pulled distributors to run a scope through the top finisher’s power plants. All were deemed legal and look forward to the next SST SuperStock Tour race back at the BullRing, Sunday Sept. 7th (2:30pm).

MiniCups fit so well at WCIS like NASCAR at Bristol…High speed and pedal to the floor. # 11 rookie modified Mini-Cup driver Cole Smith gave the points leader Kris Hamann a run for the flag to capture his first checkered. #24 Micoli could have also been in the mix, but was plagued once again by the loss of a drive chain. Jr Division #5 Jonny Scutt celebrated in victory lane after an adjustment to the field created by a couple of 13 horsepower carburetors.

Highly underrated, the 4Cylinder Stockers once again put on a great showoff full field competition. With the championship yet to be decided…nobody has given up the quest for the glory of winner’s circle celebration. Bradshaw Racings #02 driven by Mike Bradshaw took off to an early lead to never look back. The race for second raged on with #9 Hastrieter, #33 McDonald , #22 Miller and #8Verweys waiting to pounce.

The SST Modifieds were light in the field, but full of good racing right to the end. After a Tom’s Performance cam change #91 Joe Evans held off the hard charge of #8 Patti Pruitt. Nose to tail, they circled the BullRing clicking off the laps. Evans went on to win his second SST Feature at WCIS
