RUTHERFORD, STONE AND VERWYS GRAB VICTORIES AT WCIS
By Dave Buchanan
Mother Nature tried to interfere, but not even a few rain drops could stop the action at Wyoming County International Speedway on "Pirate Trailer Race" night presented by Letchworth Valley NAPA Auto Parts and ABC Auto Glass.
Kirk Rutherford of Barker scored the win in the SST Modified 30-lap main event for his second win of the season at Perry Bullring. Rutherford was in the right place at the right time on lap eight when Kevin Lewis and Bill Mislin made contact while racing for the top spot. Lewis spun down on the backstretch, and Mislin was sent to the rear of the field for the contact. This moved Rutherford into the first spot and he would take advantage.
Rutherford dominated the final 22 laps as he opened up a straightaway-sized lead over Phil Johnson and Jim Pierce. The win was his 11th overall of the 2007 season with the victories coming at four different race tracks including WCIS.
Phil Johnson held off Jim Pierce in a tight battle for second. It was Johnson's best ever run at the Bullring. Kevin Lewis and Dick Kluth rounded out the top five.
Todd Stone won for third time this season in the Super Stocks. Stone took the lead from Jacob Logsdon on lap three and would not relinquish it. Kevin Herbert overcame a couple of incidents with Tony Pangrazio and Ken Barber to finish second. Barber finished third and Pangrazio was fourth. Dan Scott finished out the top five.
Bill Verwys won his second-straight 4-Cylinder Wasps feature for his sixth overall of the season. Verwys took control of the race on lap three and then ran away from the field. Kevin Grom tried to track down in the closing laps, but ran out of time and settled for second. Kevin Miller, Mike Bradshaw, and Robert Dennie posted top five finishes.
Robbie Micoli broke through for his first win in the Mini Cups. Michelle Becker won the Junior division feature. Frank Piccone won the first ever Pirate Trailer Race at WCIS.
Next week, August 24, is the final Friday night show at the Perry Bullring. The SST Modifieds, Super Stocks and 4-Cylinder Wasps will be in action. Racing starts at 7:30 PM. The Sunday afternoon program returns on September 2 with Coca-Cola 100 for the SST Modified Series. Take part in WCIS's annual Labor Day Party Weekend with a party and live music the night before. Camping at the speedway is free.
