The 2007 season at Wyoming County International Speedway hit the midway point last Friday, which meant it was time for the annual double-point Midseason Championships. It's an event that can make a championship contender out of one driver and a pretender out of another.

In the SST Modifieds, Bill Mislin captured his second win of the season in the Withey Racing #29. Mislin battled back from losing the lead early to get it back with just seven laps to go.

At the start of the race a handful of drivers were bit the bad luck that comes with racing on Friday the 13th. On the opening, lap pole sitter Mike Bliss lost control going into turn three and spun in front of the entire field. Several drivers were left with nowhere to go as they piled into each other. Ed Weber, Ken Gilber, Mike VerWeire, and Bliss all suffered damage that knocked them out of the race before they even completed lap one.

Once the track was clear the race restarted with Richard Thomas and Bill Mislin on the front row. Mislin got the jump on Thomas at the drop of the green as he took the lead from the outside of the front row followed by Kevin Lewis.

Lewis did not waste time in trying challenge Mislin for the lead. On lap three, Lewis dove under Mislin going into turn three to take the top spot away.

Lewis led for the next 20 laps, but he could not pull away from Mislin. Mislin never fell more than a few car lengths behind Lewis as he waited to make his move. With seven laps to go he ducked under Lewis in turn one to regain first.

By this time Jim Pierce had joined the lead battle and he moved into second place just after Mislin moved back out in front. Pierce chased down Mislin and pressured him for first as the race got inside the final five laps. He tried make an outside pass with about three laps to go, but Mislin took him right to the frontstretch wall to block the pass.

Mislin was able to hang on for his second checkered flag of the season. Lewis got second back from Pierce to equal his career best. Pierce, Richard Thomas, and Dick Kluth rounded out the top five.

Kevin Herbert picked up his fourth win of the season in the Super Stocks. He won after a hard-fought battle with Kyle Sharpe in the closing laps. Sharpe led from the pole and was trying to get his first WCIS win, but Herbert started to put up a fight with less than five laps to go.

On lap 22, Herbert took the lead for good after going around the outside of Sharpe in turn one. Sharpe tried to claw his way back, but was not able to hang on. He had to settle for second as Herbert returned to victory lane. Todd Stone, Tony Pangrazio, and Dan Scott completed the top five.

Bill Verwys scored his fourth win of the in the 4-Cylinder Wasps. Verwys passed Margert McDonald for the lead on lap seven and never looked back as cruised to the win. McDonald was able to come home second. Kevin Miller had his best run as he finished third after holding off Kevin Grom.

Jesse Hartloff won again in the Mini Cups as he led all 12 laps of the feature. Kris Hamman finished second. Paul Faleski was third.

Next week, July 21st, the Casey Midget Series returns for their third visit of the season. They will be joined by the Super Stocks and 4-Cylinder Wasps. Racing starts at 7:30 PM. The SST Modifieds will have the night off but they will in action on Sunday afternoon as part of the Dirt Modified Expo. Dirt Modifieds will try their hand at racing on the Perry Bullring's tricky asphalt surface. The Street Stocks and Legends will be also be on the race card. Sunday racing starts at 2:30 PM.
